Understand the difference between ZPL and PDF formats and which one you should use.

ZPL vs PDF Labels

When setting up your shipping software, you might see options for ZPL or PDF. What's the difference?

What is PDF?

Portable Document Format. It's a visual representation of the page. It's universal but not always optimized for thermal printers.

What is ZPL?

Zebra Programming Language. It's a code that tells the printer exactly where to draw lines and text.

Which is Better?

  • ZPL: Faster, crisper text, perfect for barcodes. Best for high volume.
  • PDF: Easier to view on screen, universal compatibility. Good for low to medium volume.

If you have a Zebra printer, use ZPL. For most others, PDF is safer but might need cropping.
